Some important things you should know if you are in or around New York City.
Most recently, the rate of homelessness in New York City has increased. It is believed that this has reached one of the highest levels since the 1930s, a time of the Great Depression. A report reveals that some months ago, the city had nearly 84,000 homeless people. This included more than 27,000 kids who depended on the main municipal shelter system for their survival.
Shelters Are Overwhelmed
Every day, a significant number of migrants come to New York City with the aim of improving their lives in the near future. This has worsened the situation because shelters are now full of asylum seekers.
Most of these individuals come from Burundi, Venezuela, Peru, Colombia, and other places. I have seen people lining up outside the migrant intake center of the Roosevelt Hotel. Hundreds of people remain there and wait for their turn. Some can be found spending their nights on the sidewalk and struggling for food.

Why Are There Many Homeless People In NYC (New York City)?
In other parts of the country, especially in the West, people are living on the streets because of a limited number of options. In New York City, the possible and main reason for an extremely high level of homelessness is that the city is legally bound to give shelter to anyone who asks for it, and there is not enough space because a significant number of people have actually started asking for shelter.
Another cause is the expensive housing market. Many families have started going homeless due to a lack of money. Some even have no jobs and cannot afford a home. As a result, they begin seeking shelter.

The Solutions
It is the duty of the official and private sectors to provide people with shelter. If possible, more asylums should be made across the city. Besides, people should be given jobs according to their qualifications and capabilities so that they can support their families and get financial freedom. It may eventually lead them to the point where they can afford a home of their own.
